Skin care vows for perfect skin

There are not many people with perfect skin and getting there is a challenge for many. All of us do know that we need to care for skin but certain habits make it impossible to attain a perfect skin. Few men and women spend big money on adult acne treatment without realising the importance of skin care routine. Beauty experts swear by a regular skin care routine to combat dull, acne prone and lifeless skin. Aside from the regular cleansing, exfoliation routines there are certain skin care vows that we can commit to getting a healthy skin. Committing to certain do’s and don’ts in skin care is the key for a perfect skin.

Skin care vows that one must not break
1. Never sleep in your makeup
Sleeping without removing makeup is probably the biggest reason for most of the skin woes.  In one of the surveys on cosmetics, it was found that approximately 33% of the women sleep with their makeup on. Cosmetics when left for many hours on the skin are known to enlarge the pores. And with a decline in collagen production, as one gets older, enlarged pores cannot be repaired. The makeup that is left unwashed causes inflammation resulting in free radicals that breaks the collagen and ages the skin faster to resist it use makeup removers.

2. Do not forget to take care of your neck
Signs of aging appear on neck faster than on the face. The skin on the neck is as sensitive as the facial skin. Hence, your neck should be protected from sun damage by applying a good amount of sunscreen along with the regular skin care routine.

3. Do not use old cosmetics
A study on cosmetic usage revealed some shocking statistics. Approximately 79% mascara tubes were found to be containing staph bacteria and 86% of women were using mascara that had passed its expiry date. Old lipsticks are known to darken the lip colour due to the allergens in the product.

4. Do not use hot water to wash the skin
Skin maintains its shine and suppleness due to the oils produced by the sebaceous glands. When skin is washed with hot water it loses its oil resulting in dry and itchy skin. It is better to use tepid to cold water to wash the skin.

5. Stop smoking
Kathryn J, Martires B.A et al, Western Reserve School of Medicine, Cleveland found that the Photodamage of the skin was due to 40% of non-genetic, environmental factors. Photodamage is nothing but wrinkles, pigmentations, dilated blood vessels on facial skin and spots. The research further revealed that one of the non-genetic that caused Photodamage is smoking. Quitting smoking is not easy but with the right support group and therapy, it is possible to stop smoking.

6. Get eight hours of sleep
Sleeping for eight hours may not be possible for people on the go but our skin requires the ‘beauty sleep’ to replenish and rejuvenate. A research team from University Hospital Case Medical centre found that people who slept less showed increased signs of aging and those who slept less perceived their skin poorly. It is better to ensure a good night’s sleep to look fresh and attain healthy skin.

7. Reduce  Sodium content in your diet
Sodium otherwise known as ‘salt’ is one of the essential nutrients for our body. However sodium when consumed in excess can dehydrate the skin. To check the salt intake, diet can be reassessed to cut down processed foods and to include fresh herbs and fruits. If you are suffering from hypertension or diabetes, it is better to consult with your physician before embarking on a low sodium diet.

8. Manage stress effectively
Stress can age your skin faster than most of the other factors. Stress imbalances the hormones that might result in acne break out, blemishes and spots. Stress also affects sleep thereby indirectly aging the skin. In recent years, everybody is talking about coping with stress. There are many ways to manage stress and finally to be stress-free like exercising, listening to music, Breathing exercises, working on hobbies etc.

9. Reduce sugar content in your diet
Just like salt, sugar is needed by our body for many functions. But anything in excess is bad for health and sugar is no exception. Consuming sugar in high quantities is known to cause collagen breakdown leading to aging and dryness of the skin. One can manage their sweet tooth by replacing processed sweets with fruits.

10.  Avoid makeup overdose
As per the study results one in three women does not leave house without makeup on. Some women keep testing too many cosmetics that expose the skin to allergens. Few others put their make up on while undergoing adult acne treatment.  Makeup is good to make one look beautiful but using too many products and cosmetics can traumatize your skin.
